2020 New Designated Hitter Rulings
A designated hitter can be utilized in one of two batting order options:
Option One, is still the same as prior years. The coach may choose to use a ten-man DH batting order, with any defensive player placed in the non-batting ten spot.

Option one, the DH is terminated for the remainder of the game when:
1. A starter or substitute defensive player in the non-batting ten spot bats, pitch hits or pinch runs for the

2. Any DH assumes a defensive position. NFHS Rule 3-1-4-a-1, Pg. 28
Option Two is new, the coach may choose to use a nine-man batting order, with any defensive player selected will be both a DH and a defensive player.

A legal substitute may replace the defensive player. Any starting defensive player, may re-enter once.

Option two, the DH is terminated for the remainder of the game when:
1. Any substitute for a defensive role plays an offensive role.
